Albert Brooks, aka “Al’ “Ole AL” or “Whitey” was born at Mercy Hospital, in Oklahoma City, OK, November 9, 1933. He was peacefully ushered by angels into the presence of Jesus, January 17, 2025, in Mesa, AZ, surrounded by family, after a short battle with an unknown lung infection.
Al joined the Navy November 5, 1951, at age 17, with the permission of his mother, because he could not tolerate both his brothers serving in Korea without him. He served proudly in the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged September 7, 1954, just 2 months before his 21st birthday.
Within a short time of discharge from the Navy, Al married the love of his life, his “Baby Doll,” and “Sweetheart,” September 13, 1954, in Phoenix, AZ. The short ceremony was performed in Dorothy’s parent’s living room by Reverend CC Rains, while Dorothy’s brother Robert, who was supposed to be a witness, was washing his car. For their honeymoon, the newlyweds traveled with Dorothy’s family, to Dorothy’s grandfather’s funeral and they shared a room on their wedding night with Robert.
Al joined the other members of the family and began working in Sprinkler Fitting. He joined the Local Sprinkler Fitters Union #669 in 1956 and was a member until his passing. He was the oldest living member of the union in the state of Arizona. Approximately around 1992, need for sprinkler work decreased. Since Al was already doing small welding jobs, the family convinced him to start his own business and thus Brooks Wrought Iron was established.
Eventually, Al retired early from Sprinkler work to run his wrought iron business full time. He continued with wrought iron till Dorothy convinced him to hang up his welder when he was 82 years old. But he continued small jobs out of his garage after they moved from Gilbert to Mesa.
Al’s interests/loves were in this order, GOD, Dorothy, Family, work, guns, hunting and playing softball with the church league till he was 55.
