Queen Creek, Pinal County breaks ground on final stretch of Meridian corridor

“We know our residents want more and improved roadways. As a council, we continue to invest in roadway infrastructure,” Queen Creek Mayor Gail Barney said.

On Jan. 5, the Town of Queen Creek and Pinal County broke ground on the Meridian Road extension project, a future regional corridor that is being extended from Queen Creek Road to Germann Road.

Being constructed by Banicki, the roadway extension project will include a new two-lane road that will connect the existing Meridian Road, south of Queen Creek Road, to the northern project that is currently under construction. The two new sections will result in Meridian Road connecting from Combs Road all the way to the State Route (SR) 24 extension.

“We know our residents want more and improved roadways. As a council, we continue to invest in roadway infrastructure,” Queen Creek Mayor Gail Barney said. “This is just one of the many roadway improvement projects currently underway in Queen Creek and it is an important project. Not only will this north/south connector improve traffic flow in Queen Creek, it will also improve transportation for the region. I’d like to thank Supervisor Goodman and Pinal County for continuing to be a great partner, especially when it comes to our roads.”

Both new sections of Meridian Road, from Queen Creek Road to Germann Road and Germann Road to SR 24, are joint projects with Pinal County.

“It is very humbling and exciting to witness another groundbreaking ceremony take place for this critical north-south connection,” said Supervisor Mike Goodman, Pinal County District 2. “The fast-approaching completion of Meridian Road all the way to SR 24 will enhance the quality of life we all strive for within the San Tan Valley/Queen Creek community. Pinal County is sincerely grateful for the Town of Queen Creek's partnership on projects like this that are an imperative piece to solving many of the regional challenges we face.”

The completion is slated to coincide with the opening of the SR24 extension, an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project, in late summer 2022.

The SR24 extension will provide two lanes in each direction from Ellsworth Road to Ironwood Road, providing major relief for Queen Creek and the region. The interim roadway will include access ramps at Williams Field, Signal Butte, Meridian and Ironwood roads. For more information, visit QueenCreekAZ.gov/SR24.
