In the evolving world of social media, Shannon Nolan has built a platform that blends adventure, astrophotography, and support for local businesses. Known as @shan.in.az on Instagram, she shares striking images of Arizona’s landscapes, night skies, and hidden gems while fostering a community of outdoor enthusiasts and small business supporters.
Originally from Maryland, Nolan moved to Arizona in 2011 to coach girls’ lacrosse at Phoenix Country Day School. After spending time in the Valley, she was drawn to the landscapes of Northern Arizona and relocated to the Sedona area in 2014, where she continues to explore and highlight the region.
A digital diary
What started as a personal Instagram account in 2011 has grown into a widely followed platform showcasing Arizona’s natural beauty and local businesses.
“My social media has always been what I consider a public diary of adventures… I love to showcase some of the really cool places I have the opportunity to visit, the awesome activities I get to enjoy, and more recently I am focusing on showcasing local businesses in the areas that I frequent,” Nolan said. “My favorite thing about connecting with others through my platform is seeing how diverse the world is, yet we all have so much in common.”
A positive space in the digital world
At a time when social media can feel overwhelming, Nolan strives to create an uplifting space.
“Everyone has different things in life that have shaped them and their beliefs from hunters to hikers, climbers and mountain bikers,” Nolan said. “My goal is to bring people of all backgrounds together for the love of Arizona and the outdoors.”
Her content provides an escape, whether through an astrophotography shot or a feature on a hidden cafe in Sedona.
“The most rewarding thing since starting my account is when people tell me that I inspired them in some way—whether it’s to go look at the stars, to volunteer in their local community, or to just get outside,” Nolan said. “It always puts a smile on my face.”
While Nolan’s Instagram showcases stunning photography and outdoor adventures, there’s much more to her life than what appears online. “A fun fact about me that you wouldn’t guess is that I’m a business owner and mom of three,” she shares. “I don’t showcase my kids on my social media very often for their own privacy, but 70% of my day is spent being a mom and 20% is spent running my company. What everyone sees on social media is the remaining 10%.”
