Arizona Department of Gaming releases figures from first 2 months of sports betting

The Arizona Department of gaming recently released figures from the first partial and full month of mobile sports betting in Arizona. A few notable figures: 

September 

  • September total sports betting handle $291,212,868.
  • September mobile sports betting handle $288,128,579.
  • September sports betting revenue $31,393.

October

  • October sports betting handle $486,097,352, up 66.9 percent from September.
  • October mobile sports betting handle $479,255,072, up 66.3 percent from September.
  • October sports betting revenue $10,355,580, up 2,539 percent from September.
  • October state tax from sports betting $1,022,841, up 3,158 percent from September.

“Arizona made an explosive entrance on to the sports betting scene, coinciding with the first day of NFL season 2021, the state’s launch marks the most successful since legal sports betting expanded in the U.S. in 2018, raking in $291 million in wagers for the first month of mobile betting. The first full month of betting in October placed Arizona among top markets, with the seveth largest handle, behind New Jersey, Nevada, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Colorado,” said Christopher Boan, analyst for BetArizona.com. “Operators in the state offered more than $31 million in free bets and promotional credits in September as the market opened. As a result, Arizona took in $31,393 in taxes for September. Operators offered more than $25 million in free bets and promotional credits in October, while the state took in $1.02 million in taxes. Operators get a tax break on the free bets and promotional credits they offer during the first five years of sports betting in Arizona. That tax break is up to 20 percent of their gross wagers for the first two years.

“We knew that Arizona’s sports betting numbers would be strong, and they more than delivered in September and October, firmly establishing the Grand Canyon state as a top-notch market for operators," he added. "We can easily expect to see Arizona clear $500 million in handle in the coming months, establishing the state as a top-five market for sports betting in the country.”
