Finding the facts: How to stay informed about your local schools

As the superintendent of J.O. Combs Unified School District, I recognize that sensational headlines and social media posts can sometimes create a skewed perception. However, the reality is that our schools are vibrant, supportive communities where the focus is always on our students' success.

In today's fast-paced world, our schools are thriving hubs of learning and growth, where passionate educators are committed to nurturing our students every day. As the superintendent of J.O. Combs Unified School District, I recognize that sensational headlines and social media posts can sometimes create a skewed perception. However, the reality is that our schools are vibrant, supportive communities where the focus is always on our students' success.

So, how can you get a true sense of what’s going on in our district and in public schools across the area? Here are some practical ways to stay informed and connected:

1. Volunteer in one of our schools.

One of the best ways to see the amazing accomplishments of our students is to volunteer in our schools. For example, our district participates in a program through AARP where volunteers work with our students to help improve reading skills.

2. Visit school websites and social media.

Our district and individual schools maintain websites and social media accounts where we regularly post updates, announcements and success stories. These platforms are a great way to get accurate and up-to-date information straight from the source. Follow your local schools on social media to see the exciting projects and initiatives our students and teachers are working on.

3. Talk to educators and administrators.

If you have specific concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out directly to teachers, principals or district administrators. We are here to help and are more than willing to discuss any topic that’s on your mind. Building relationships with the people who work in our schools can give you a clearer, more personal understanding of the challenges and successes we experience.

4. Participate in school events.

Many of our schools host events throughout the year, from open houses to student performances and athletic games. Attending these events is a wonderful way to see our schools in action. You’ll get to witness firsthand the talent, creativity and dedication of our students and staff.

By taking these steps, you can cut through the noise and get a clear, accurate picture of what’s really happening in our schools. The more informed we are as a community, the better we can support our students and ensure that our schools continue to be places of learning, growth and opportunity. Public education is a cornerstone of our society, and it’s up to all of us to stay engaged and informed.

In J.O. Combs Unified School District, we’re proud of the work we do, and we’re committed to keeping our community informed and involved every step of the way. I encourage you to reach out, get involved, and see for yourself the positive impact our schools are making every day.
