Things to do: Downtown Mesa BBQ Classic fires up local tastebuds

Feast on bold flavors from expert grillers from across the country Nov. 8-9 in downtown Mesa.

Fire up your tastebuds! The second annual Downtown Mesa BBQ Classic is returning to the Valley after being a resounding success last year. More than 40 world-class pitmasters, from all over the Valley and region, will take over the East Valley for a two-day unforgettable weekend of smoky, mouthwatering goodness in the heart of Downtown Mesa (N. Macdonald and W. Pepper.).

Perfect for families and BBQ lovers of all ages, this year’s festival promises epic grill-offs, savory tastings, live entertainment and fun activities for all ages. Brought to you by Downtown Mesa Association, the excitement kicks off Friday, Nov. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m., with a dessert and appetizer competition, followed by a full day of activities on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We're bringing the best of BBQ from across the region with top pitmasters, local food vendors, and an array of family-friendly activities for everyone,” said Terry Madeksza, director of the Downtown Mesa Association. “There truly is no other event in metro Phoenix that comes close to what people can expect to see and taste. We’re cranking up the heat for an experience that will have people talking — and tasting — long after the grills cool down.”

Bring that sweet tooth! To kick off the event on Friday, Nov. 8, starting at 5 p.m., participants will compete in dessert and appetizer competitions. The public can purchase tasting tickets for just $2 each. Winners will be hand selected by community votes.

Then, get ready for the ultimate showdown as the flames ignite and the gloves come off as dozens of pitmasters go grill-to-grill for the coveted recognition of being crowned the very best in BBQ on Saturday, Nov. 9 beginning at 11 a.m. The public can purchase tasting tickets for $2 and watch as the region’s top BBQ legends battle it out for smoky supremacy in a sizzling display of skill, flavor, and fire—all while being judged by trained BBQ experts. From secret rubs to slow-smoked perfection, these pitmasters will pull out all the stops to claim the title of BBQ king (or queen) in this high-stakes, mouthwatering contest with winners announced that afternoon.

Local food vendors will also be on-site all-day Saturday selling both BBQ and non-BBQ plates. Line dancing lessons, activities for kids and local artisanal items will be available for sale.
