The Queen Creek Police Department (QCPD) is investigating after a fourth-grade student reportedly brought a gun to a local charter school Thursday morning.
"At 8:22 a.m. this morning, staff at Legacy Traditional School's Queen Creek campus contacted QCPD regarding a student who had brought a firearm to school. When officers arrived, school staff had already removed the child away from other students, to a secure area," said a statement from QCPD.
School staff called police, and when officers arrived, the child had already been moved to a secure area away from other students. School officials said the student never pulled out the gun, which was later found in their backpack.
Police confiscated the firearm from the student, who allegedly brought the weapon onto campus that belonged to a family member.
Extra officers were dispatched to the school's campus to ensure the area was safe. The case has been submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for charging considerations against the student.
Police did not disclose whether the weapon was loaded nor the student's possible motive for bringing it to campus. Parents received a letter home from the school, which said school officials worked quickly to get the student away from others, and was detained by police.
The school released a statement, saying they are fully cooperating with police and that the student is prohibited from entering campus. No one was hurt.
“QCPD values the strong partnerships we have built with our school community. I have personally visited and met with the leaders of every single school in the Queen Creek jurisdiction. We will continue to work with all of our schools and strengthen that relationship. We would also like to commend the student who saw something suspicious and reported it to the proper adults in this case. Every parent should have that conversation with their children — if you see something, say something. That's what a student did in this case and that is what led to a quick and peaceful resolution to this tense situation," Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice said in an email to the Queen Creek Sun Times.
