For local families seeking a premier dual-language education, Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) offers an unmatched opportunity. The district’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program for Mandarin, housed at Desert Canyon Elementary and Desert Canyon Middle School, is not just an educational experience—it’s a cultural journey that prepares students for a global future.

A Unique Path to Biliteracy

At Desert Canyon Elementary School, the DLI program follows a 50/50 model, where students split their day between English and Mandarin instruction.

In grades K-3, subjects like Reading, Writing, and Social Studies are taught in English, while Math, Science, and Mandarin Language are taught in Mandarin. By grades 4-5, English instruction shifts to Reading, Writing, and Math, with Science, Social Studies, and Mandarin Language taught in Mandarin.

“Our program is designed to support all students, including those on an accelerated path,” said Kimberly Mills, principal of Desert Canyon Elementary. “It’s amazing to see students develop their skills in two languages simultaneously. Their ability to switch between English and Mandarin fluently is a testament to their dedication and the effectiveness of our curriculum.”

At Desert Canyon Middle School, students take on an even more rigorous curriculum, using high school-level coursework.

“Sixth graders start with Mandarin 1A, progressing to Mandarin 1B in seventh grade and Mandarin 2 in eighth grade—an accredited high school course,” explained Desert Canyon Middle School Principal Robert Akhbari. “Additionally, students learn science in Mandarin, and we strive for them to use the language for more than 60% of class time.”

The program’s structure ensures students are not only learning the language but mastering it.

“By the time they reach high school, our students are well-prepared to take Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Mandarin courses,” Akhbari added. “Some even earn up to two years of college credit before graduating.”

An Enriching Cultural Experience

Beyond language instruction, students immerse themselves in the culture through school-wide celebrations, special Mandarin-focused classes and cultural performances. The highlight of the year is the Chinese New Year celebration, where students from all grades perform in Mandarin, strengthening their language skills and cultural appreciation.

“We want our students to experience the richness of the culture along with the language,” Mills noted. “During our Chinese New Year celebration, students perform traditional songs and dances in Mandarin. It’s a wonderful way to build confidence and connect with the cultural aspects of their studies.”

Parental Involvement and Community Support

Families play a crucial role in student success within the DLI program. Parents are encouraged to participate in classroom activities, attend cultural events, and utilize resources like books, music, and online applications to support language learning at home.

“Parental involvement is a key component of our success,” Akhbari said. “We see the strongest language development when families engage with their children’s learning, whether through volunteering, attending events, or simply encouraging them to use Mandarin at home.”

For families who don’t speak Mandarin, there are still plenty of ways to support their child’s education.

“We suggest parents connect with the DLI community and local Chinese cultural centers,” Akhbari said. “Their involvement is the backbone of our program’s strength.”

Why Mandarin?

With over 1.1 billion Mandarin speakers worldwide, the language is a key player in global commerce and diplomacy. Learning Mandarin enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills while providing students with a competitive edge in college applications and future careers.

“Mandarin is one of the most important languages in today’s world,” Mills emphasized. “We’re giving our students a head start in global business, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.”

The program’s advanced pathway continues into Desert Mountain High School, where students can take Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment, and International Baccalaureate (IB) Mandarin courses, earning college credit while still in high school.

A Destination for North Valley Families

With its rigorous academics, rich cultural experiences, and unparalleled dual-language immersion program, SUSD’s Mandarin DLI schools have become a top destination for families from around the Valley seeking an exceptional education.

“If you’re looking for an immersive, enriching program that prepares students for the future, this is it,” Akhbari said. “The skills our students gain here will benefit them for a lifetime.”
