September 21, 1930 – January 12, 2022
Thera Nicholas Huish, 91, passed away January 12th, 2022 in Mesa, AZ. Thera was born in Promontory, UT on September 21st, 1930 to Joe and Doran Nicholas. She was the second of their 8 children.
Thera led a very full and eventful life. Raised in Promontory, UT, at 16 years old she married Dorian Toland and they moved to BYU in Provo, UT. They had two children, Val and Patricia (Trish) Toland. At 18 years old her husband Dorian was killed in a plane accident. Thera moved back towards home, knowing she had to draw heavily on her farming background to raise the children on her own. Fortunately, she met a handsome man named Sterling Huish, it wasn’t long after that they were married. Sterling was starting his career in the military and his job took their family all over the world. They lived in California, Indiana, Germany, Utah, Nevada and Okinawa. Together, they had 3 boys – Richard (Rick), Robin (Bob) and Todd (Nick). They finished his military career in Bountiful UT. In 1976, the family moved to Mesa, AZ. Thera and Sterling were married for 51 beautiful years until he passed in 2001.
Thera was preceded in death by her parents Joe &Doran Nicholas, Dorian Toland (1st husband), Sterling Huish (2nd husband), Patricia Willoughby (daughter), Richard Huish (son), and Robin Huish (son). Others close to her included Hayden Willoughby (grandson) and Sadie Huish (great granddaughter).
She is survived by Val Toland (son), Cathe Toland (daughter in law), Diana Toland (daughter in law), children – Cy Toland, Lisa Toland, Lee Toland, Shane Toland, Danielle Mailland. Children of Trish Toland – Marsha Kovalak, and Thera Tolman. Children of Rick Huish – Casey Huish, Corey Huish, and Cobey Huish. Children of Bob Huish – Mackenzie Casey and Zachary Huish. Todd Huish (son) Cara Huish (daughter in law) children – Nicole Burleigh, and Adam Huish. Great grandkids 34, great-great grandkids – 6. Her siblings that have survived her are Howard & Dale Nicholas.
During Thera’s time being a mom and running a busy home with 5 children, she also developed a love for selling and making a difference in the lives of others with whom she worked. She obtained an insurance license at one point, ran a large NCO club on Okinawa while stationed there, and finally found her niche in Network marketing. She built large national organizations for different companies and at one time, with her daughter Trish, they were national sales directors with 40,000 plus people in their own organization. She loved working with health products and was a great believer in all she represented.
Thera’s greatest talent was to love people and to build them up. Her enthusiasm and mentorship abilities have developed many successful family members, and especially strong daughters and granddaughters. Those who dealt with her always grew to love her for her kindness and desire to achieve. She was the epitome of a strong independent, caring Woman, Mother, and Daughter.
Thera not only enjoyed working, but she loved singing, playing the piano, and inviting others to her church. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she always helped others find peace and love through association there. One family she introduced to the church, early in their years in the military, stayed in touch with Thera over the years and told her three years ago, that her introduction of the church to their family has led to over 400 members today.
Her love for her Savior and her family were the pinnacle of importance in her life.
While Thera had more than her share of great loss and pain throughout her life, she was always positive and lived her famous mantra, “Get UP, Dress Up and Show Up”. There will ever only be 1 Thera Huish. We will miss her incredibly. We look forward to our reunion with her, and other family members with great appreciation for all she has taught and exampled here for us. We love you forever.
