The Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council (GCC), an independent non-profit organization chartered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Arizona, announced its continued partnership with Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction by hosting its Third Annual Pinewood Derby Open for local Scout families this weekend.
The Pinewood Derby Open is the most anticipated, action-packed event benefiting GCC and is scheduled on opening day of Barrett-Jackson's collector car auction at Westworld of Scottsdale, located at 16601 N. Pima Road, in the event's pre-staging lanes.
“The tradition continues for its third year at Barrett-Jackson, and we are honored to be a part of it,” said Andy Price, Grand Canyon Council CEO and Scout executive. “The Pinewood Derby is a time-honored institution that encourages families to work together, experience the sense of accomplishment and the excitement of competition, learn good sportsmanship and strengthen relationships, which is what Scouting is all about.”
The Pinewood Derby Open begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 for Scouts. Winners will be named the Barrett-Jackson Pinewood Derby Champion in the auction’s pre-staging lanes. There will be free entry all day for all Scouts in their BSA uniform (youth and adult).
The Pinewood Derby was first introduced as a two-lane wooden track in California in 1953. The goal is for Cub Scouts and their parents to work together turning some wood, four plastic wheels and four nails into a custom race car that is 5 ounces or less, goes fast and looks "cool." Bringing this long-standing scouting tradition to Barrett-Jackson allows event sponsors to connect with like-minded automotive enthusiasts and professionals who are committed to youth-focused initiatives.
Scouting in Arizona started more than 100 years ago with a handful of troops scattered across the state and has since grown to serve thousands of youth ranging from ages 5-20. Since GCC BSA was established, more than 48,000 young men and women have become Eagle Scouts, thea highest honor awarded by BSA.
Barrett-Jackson’s opening day is also Family Day. In addition to the Scout activities, Barrett-Jackson will also host STEM Fest as a part of Family Day, allowing young auction-goers the opportunity to learn and participate in several immersive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math exhibits.
