The town of Queen Creek’s volunteer coordinator, Kim Nishihara, recently received the Outstanding Volunteer Administrator Award. This award recognizes qualities that include effective use of leadership skills, creative utilization of people, resources, and opportunities, a strong sense of professional ethics, and an ability to mentor youth and/or peers, according to the town.

“Kim has been such an asset to our organization and our community,” said Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley. “Kim was hired just two years ago to start the town’s first centralized volunteer program and, in her short time with our team, she has made tremendous strides in the volunteer arena. We have seen so much success in a short time and Kim is the absolute perfect person to run this program.”

Kim started working with the town of Queen Creek in 2022 – she was hired to implement a centralized volunteer program for the town, which launched in January 2023. The centralized program includes one place for all town volunteer opportunities, a primary point of contact, background screenings for applicable positions, and options for volunteers to provide feedback.

Through the program, the town is committed to providing opportunities for volunteers to use and develop new skills, train and provide necessary oversight, and provide applicable information, equipment and materials. At the recent Founders’ Day event, 254 volunteers provided nearly 800 hours of service – providing set up, clean up and event support.
