Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority welcomes Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley to its board of directors

Wheatley was elected Queen Creek’s mayor in August 2022

The Town of Queen Creek has a new representative on the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority (PMGAA) Board of Directors, Mayor Julia Wheatley.

Wheatley was elected Queen Creek’s mayor last August. Her term as mayor began in January and goes through January 2027. She previously served as Town Council member, first elected in 2010 and reelected in 2014 and 2018.

In addition to the PMGAA Board of Directors, Wheatley also represents Queen Creek on the Maricopa Association of Governments Regional Council and Transportation Policy committees and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council Mayors and Supervisors Council.

Wheatley holds a bachelor's degree in legal studies with a minor in criminal justice. She is an Arizona native and she and her husband, Benjamin, have four children and own a mortgage and real estate company.

PMGAA reported a net operating income of $562,645 for January, an increase of $192,847 compared to January 2022. Consistent with other months during the first half of fiscal year 2023, aeronautical and non-aeronautical revenues were driven by record-setting commercial passenger activity levels increasing fuel sales, parking revenue, rental car fees and concession revenue. Monthly concession sales reflect not only an increase in total sales, but also an increase in concession revenue per enplaned passenger. New food and beverage concessions Macayo’s Mexican Food and Infusion Coffee and Tea Crafters are proving popular with air travelers, according to March's Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Executive Director's Report.

In addition, PMGAA has launched a new east side terminal planning initiative called Gateway Tomorrow. This inclusive, long-range exercise will consider, refocus and build upon past terminal planning efforts using recent data and updated information about the region, the airport, the aviation industry and current global economic conditions. The goal of Gateway Tomorrow is to reset and refine the airport's shared vision for a future commercial passenger terminal campus, identify the most important elements to be included in Phase I, develop general cost estimates and explore possible funding sources/creative funding mechanisms.

The Gateway Tomorrow Study Advisory Committee (SAC) includes members from Queen Creek, Mesa, Gilbert, Apache Junction, the Gila River Indian Community and Phoenix. The SAC also includes representatives from Allegiant, the Federal Aviation Administration, PHX East Valley Partnership and other stakeholders.
