Second Friday Showcase, a nightclub event featuring live DJ performances and art displays by Mesa Community College (MCC) DJ and art program students, is scheduled from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Oct.11 at MCC’s Southern and Dobson Campus, located at 1833 W. Southern Avenue in Mesa.
Admission to the dance floor is $1 for students and $2 for non-students with all proceeds benefiting student programs and groups.The family friendly event will be held outside in Lot C near the John D. Riggs stadium.
“It’s an evening of music, art, fun and connection whether you’re a student, faculty member or part of the local community. This event is a great opportunity to come together to celebrate our shared love of creativity,” said James Gaspar, MCC DJ program teaching assistant and DJ team coordinator.
Attendees can watch students in the DJ Club, known as Club Thunder, showcase their creative skills with live sets ranging from house and hip-hop to techno and trance. MCC art students display and sell their artwork and hold live painting sessions. Also, food trucks, in addition to food and drinks sold by other MCC clubs, are available and information booths offer information on the college’s diverse range of programs, classes and bachelor’s degrees.
Guests also have the opportunity to chat with students in both the DJ and Art programs who can share their creative journeys and discuss the distinctive benefits of these MCC programs.
Gaspar, who spearheaded the idea for the showcase, wished to create an event with experiences for a wide range of people and interests. “If you’re looking for high-energy nightclub-style fun, we have it because we’re actually building a nightclub here on campus,” he said. “But if you’re more chill and you just want to see some art, well, we’ve got that too.”
All showcase events, held every month through the fall semester, are PG-13 with no alcohol or substances allowed. “Second Friday is a safe place for people to enjoy themselves and have fun,” he added.
Upcoming showcase events are scheduled for Nov. 8 and Dec 13. With the exception of the Oct. 11 event, the location is the Navajo Room near the clock tower on the Southern and Dobson Campus.
