A Phoenix 15-year-old and two Arizona grown-ups, all with very inventive taste buds, will have their carnival-inspired donut flavors featured in Bashas’ bakeries across the state this month.
As part of its seventh annual Donut Flavor Craze contest, Bashas’ invited kids and grown-ups across the state to dream up the best new carnival-inspired flavor for its donut cases. Submissions included a medley of donuts representing the best of carnival fare: deep-fried Twinkies, Arizona fry bread, fresh-squeezed lemonade and caramel apples. A panel of local celebrity judges helped Bashas’ to select the winning donut flavors.
A 15-year-old boy from Phoenix, a grown-up from Camp Verde, and a Bashas’ team member (employee) from Gilbert are the grand prize winners this year. Their Cotton Candy, Deep-Fried Oreo and Blue-Ribbon Blueberry Pie donuts took the top prizes.
- Owen, a 15-year-old boy from Phoenix, submitted the winning donut in the kids’ category. His Cotton Candy donut is a white raised donut with blue icing, topped with frosted circus animal cookies and rainbow sprinkles.
- Ashton Morley, from Camp Verde, submitted the winning donut in the grown-up category. His Deep-Fried Oreo donut features a cookies-and-cream-flavored filling, crunchy Oreo cookie bits, a dusting of powdered sugar and a Nutella icing drizzle.
- Josh Weisler, a Bashas’ team member (employee) from Gilbert, submitted the winning donut in the grocer’s internal company contest. His Blue-Ribbon Blueberry Pie donut is filled with blueberry jam and topped with icing, powdered sugar and pie crust crumbs.
The three winning donuts will be available for purchase in Bashas’ bakery cases across the state for a limited time, this month.
In addition to being named Bashas’ Official Donut Ambassadors for 2022, Owen, Ashton and Josh will each receive one dozen donuts every month for a year from Bashas’ bakery and $500 worth of prizes, including a Bashas’ grocery gift card, baking/cooking gadgets and family-fun activities.
