With an interior that rivals the Ritz Hotel and a shady patio for tea al fresco, the English Rose Tea Room has offered a one-of-a-kind experience for tea lovers in Carefree for over 20 years. From exquisite floral decor to crystal chandeliers and bone china, the English Rose Tea Room brings the charm of England to the Arizona desert.
Located in Carefree at 201 East St., Ste 103, the shop is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Friday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Originally from southern England, Jo Gemmill, owner of the English Tea Room, moved to Carefree in 2001 with the dream of finding a way to combine her love of tea, hospitality and all things British. As a child growing up, tea was a part of her daily life.
“As any self-respecting Brit would attest… Life is always better with tea,” Gemmill said. “Unable to find a decent cup of tea anywhere, Carefree, Arizona, known for its stunning desert landscapes and vibrant art scene, soon became home to the English Rose Tea Room.”
At the start, the tea room was small and quaint, reminiscent of the cozy tea rooms Gemmill grew up visiting. It quickly became a beloved destination for those seeking an authentic afternoon tea experience. Guests could indulge in the “Duchess of Bedford's Formal Afternoon Tea,” complete with fine teas, finger sandwiches, and an array of pastries. The menu also featured hearty British favorites like Cottage Pie.
In 2021, after 20 years of serving tea in the community, the pandemic forced Gemmill to make some changes.
“I did a complete remodel of the interior, creating a lighter, brighter and more spacious dining experience,” Gemmill said. “I ramped up the roses, cranking up the chic and in doing so, the tea room went viral.” TikTok videos showcasing its whimsical charm helped keep the doors open during the tough post-pandemic months.
In addition to the remodel, Gemmill modernized the reservation system, allowing guests to book their afternoon tea experiences online—though this also meant planning ahead, as weekend slots now sell out weeks in advance. A refreshed logo, new menus, and stylish staff uniforms rounded out the tea room’s transformation.
Despite its evolution, the heart of the English Rose Tea Room remains the same— a place where tradition and hospitality comes first. The menu continues to feature a mix of classic English tea fare and pub-inspired dishes. Guests can enjoy savory favorites like cucumber sandwiches, chicken salad, quiches, and Cottage Pie, alongside sweet indulgences like freshly baked scones, lavender shortbread cookies, cobbler and more. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available.
Beyond the daily tea service, the English Rose Tea Room has become known for its themed events and special gatherings. From Royal Family celebrations and festive holiday teas to Harry Potter-inspired Halloween parties and Bridgerton-themed “Spill-the-Tea” afternoons, there’s always something exciting happening. The tea room also hosts workshops on tea etiquette, literature and English culture.
With over 50 loose leaf teas to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect brew for any tea lover. For Gemmill, the tea room is more than just a business—it’s a sanctuary where people can slow down, connect with loved ones and embrace a timeless tradition.
“Whether stopping by for a quick cuppa or lingering over a leisurely afternoon tea, visitors to the English Rose Tea Room are sure to be transported to a world of refinement and charm,” Gemmill said. “As the sun sets over the desert landscape of Carefree, Arizona, the English Rose Tea Room will stand as a beacon of English grace and hospitality, inviting all who enter to experience a taste of the timeless tradition of afternoon tea.”
