As you may know, STEAM is a common acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD) understands the importance of the “A” in STEAM, which represents our emphasis on Art and Fine Arts. Music and arts education is essential for our students to become well-rounded individuals with an appreciation for the creative process. March is Music in our Schools Month as well as Youth Arts Month. It’s the perfect time to highlight the unique programs and opportunities our students have to express themselves creatively and hone their craft.
QCUSD students who begin their academic journey in our elementary schools are exposed to art at an early age. Whether it’s through Art Masterpiece, choir or band at Queen Creek elementary, handbells at Frances-Brandon Pickett, or after-school clubs like cartoon drawing or pottery painting, children in QCUSD have the opportunity to discover their passion for the arts.
Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, QCUSD’s School of Choice, is a STEAM school. This accelerated school has an on-site kiln for pottery-making, donated by the Barney family as a way to honor the school’s namesake with one of her favorite hobbies. Schnepf Elementary has a STEAM Lab on-site for projects that combine creativity with coding or engineering, made possible through a partnership with Girls Who Code.
Students in our secondary schools can find their place in the spotlight through performing arts like drama, band or choir. Junior high students can channel their inner Stomp performer in the Newell Barney Trash Can Band, or choose a traditional band or orchestra instrument at either junior high. In addition to visual art classes, options at our high schools include choir, orchestra, band, dance, theater, marching band and more.
Choosing QCUSD means choosing arts programs that are thriving. Recently, more than 15 students from Queen Creek High School’s theater program placed in the Musical Theater Competition of America. Eastmark and QCHS marching bands took home titles and additional awards in competitions this past fall.
STEAM-based education equips students with the curiosity and creativity necessary to become future leaders in our community. In QCUSD, educating the whole child is our priority.
Dr. Perry Berry has been superintendent of the Queen Creek Unified School District since June 2015.
