Practicing safe firearm protocols on National SAFE Day

Every year on June 4, National SAFE Day serves as a critical reminder of the importance of practicing firearm safety. The initiative highlights the devastating impact that carelessness with firearms can have on individuals, families and entire communities.

According to Johns Hopkins, 1 in 3 children under the age of 18 living in a home with at least one firearm, the need for education and preventive measures is more urgent than ever. Every year on June 4, National SAFE Day serves as a critical reminder of the importance of practicing firearm safety. The initiative highlights the devastating impact that carelessness with firearms can have on individuals, families and entire communities.

The primary goal of any reputable firearms training site is safety. C2 Tactical is a premier shooing facility and training site in the Valley. With two locations – Tempe and Phoenix – C2’s focus is on safe firearms manipulation, efficacy in shooting skills, and responsibility of ownership.

Secure all firearms in the home

The cornerstone of firearm safety begins with secure storage. Proper storage practices are essential to prevent unauthorized access, especially by children. Firearms should always be stored, unloaded and locked in a secure location, such as a gun safe or a lockbox. Ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the keys or combinations to these storage units is a crucial step in preventing accidental shootings and theft.

Ask questions of homes your child visits

In Arizona, guns are ubiquitous. Parents need to be proactive in safeguarding their children by asking critical questions to other adults when their child visits another home. This conversation, although sometimes uncomfortable, can significantly reduce the risk of accidental injury or death.

Frequently talk to children about firearms

Open and honest communication with children about firearms is vital. Children should be educated about the dangers of firearms and the importance of not touching them if they come across one. Establishing a protocol for what to do if your child finds an unattended firearm can save lives. For instance, instructing them to stop, do not touch, leave the area, and tell an adult can help them react appropriately in potentially dangerous situations.

Safe handling protocols

For households with firearms, it is imperative to establish and adhere to strict safety protocols. Safe handling practices like keeping a gun unloaded should be taught and reinforced regularly. Continuous training and refresher courses on firearm safety can help ensure that everyone in the household understands and follows these essential guidelines.

Educate, empower others in the community

Education and empowerment are key to creating a culture of safety. Hosting or participating in community events, workshops and safety training sessions can spread awareness and knowledge about proper firearm handling and storage. C2 Tactical provides a wide range of classes for new gun owners including – Family Firearms Safety and Youth Introduction to Firearms.

C2 Tactical is proud to help spread the word of firearm safety, and believes that careful measures should be taken every day, not just on National SAFE Day.
