Blueberries have long been celebrated for their nutritional benefits and delicious flavor, and now they're stepping into the spotlight as the official fruit of Major League Pickleball (MLP). As this vibrant fruit takes center stage in the world of competitive pickleball, it's worth exploring the reasons behind this exciting announcement and the potential impact it may have on the sport and its enthusiasts.

Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Played on a smaller court with a paddle and a plastic ball, it's popular among people of all ages for its accessibility and social nature. The sport was invented back in 1965, but its popularity has recently skyrocketed due to its accessibility, social nature, health benefits, affordability and adaptability. One in five adult Americans, or 48 million people, play or have tried pickleball – and its popularity is growing each year at a rate of 64%.

Recently, the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC) announced they are now the first-ever produce commodity to partner with MLP, to reach a growing base of pickleball fans.

Blueberries are beloved because they’re delicious, nutritious and convenient – making them the perfect partner for a sport that inspires excitement and passion in its players and fans. They make for a perfect grab-and-go snack, whether it’s time to fuel the workday or a workout. It’s easy – just rinse and go. No peeling, pitting or chopping required. Vibrant, playful and packed with delicious flavor, blueberries offer an instant boost – along with beneficial vitamins such as vitamin K and manganese mineral.

Furthermore, the low-calorie and nutrient-dense nature of blueberries makes them an ideal snack or ingredient for players looking to maintain a healthy diet and optimize their performance on the court. One cup of blueberries is considered one serving of fruit, containing 80 calories and providing a good source of fiber. For everyday athletes, pickleball fanatics, and professional MLP players, fresh blueberries are an excellent source of manganese, and a good source of vitamin C to provide the energy needed and the potential to improve recovery time. Together, USHBC and MLP the perfect partners for promoting the health benefits of blueberries and encouraging the pickleball community to eat more blueberries to support active lifestyles.
