Salt River Project (SRP) and Kabat’s Ace Hardware are partnering to host a free in-person shade screen workshop for SRP customers in Queen Creek and the surrounding East Valley at the Sheraton Mesa Home Improvement Expo this weekend.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29, the expo is happening at the Sheraton Mesa Hotel, located at 860 N. Riverview. They will conclude the workshops on Sunday, June 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshops will take place on the hour, starting at 10:30 a.m., with a lunch break from 12:30 to 1 p.m., and will resume at 1 p.m. each day. Each workshop has a duration of one hour.

Admission to the Mesa Home Improvement Expo is free and are open to all SRP customers on a first-come-first-serve basis. All shade screen supplies for one window will be provided at no cost and SRP customers need to bring the dimensions for one window, maximum window size being 48 inches by 48 inches. There will be a limit of one shade screen window per service address and customers in HOAs will need to check if black fabric is permitted in their homes.

In addition, SRP says that their customers can submit a receipt for materials and square footage of their windows to receive $1 rebate per square foot for their time and effort on additional shade screens built and installed.

Participants must sign a participation waiver and SRP experts will be available to answer customer questions about SRP programs, rebates and energy efficiency. Bilingual staff will be available at each workshop.

Shade screens can block a substantial amount of the sun’s heat, helping to lower electricity costs by 25% when added to windows that receive direct sunlight, according to SRP. During the workshops, ACE Hardware professionals will teach participants how to effectively measure, cut and install shade screens.

All necessary materials will be provided at no cost to build one shade screen, and attendees only need to bring the window’s dimensions. SRP customers can receive a rebate to offset the cost of materials purchased to build and install additional shade screens.
