Sidewalk Coffee and Bagel Co. offers Queen Creek residents a new place to get their caffeine fix.
Coffee shops are important to the owner, Azadeh Purvis. She and her husband met in a coffee shop and were married in a coffee shop.
Before she got into the coffee business, Purvis was a teacher in Laguna Beach, Calif. for 15 years. Purvis was grading papers in a coffee shop she frequented, and her husband was visiting from Queen Creek. He went to the coffee shop on a friend’s recommendation. He asked her to watch his stuff and she says she never stopped talking to him after that.
Purvis moved to Queen Creek from California four years ago. She said that she appreciates its small-town feel.
“I really love the community aspect of Queen Creek,” she said. “Even though we’re growing we’re still such a small community and I think it’s the charm. Not everyone knows about us yet and I feel like it’s kind of a hidden gem. It’s like I live in a secret little city.”
The location of Sidewalk Coffee and Bagel Co. used to be a bagel shop that Purvis enjoyed. She went into the shop on its last day in June and overheard the previous owner talking about selling. So she bought the shop.
The grand opening for Sidewalk Coffee and Bagel Co. was on Aug. 5 and there was a soft opening a few days before that.
Purvis is focusing on coffee, but the shop also sells bagels.
The name was her husband’s suggestion. When the couple travels, they choose a few coffee shops they want to visit and stay in a hotel that is within walking distance of the shops. During the walks to those coffee shops, Purvis takes pictures of her shoes on the sidewalks.
She's friends with the owner of Peixoto Coffee Roasters in Chandler and the coffee for both shops comes from her friend’s family farm in Brazil.
Purvis noted that their new espresso machine is top of the line.
“We’re making sure that we’re selling the best coffee in Queen Creek,” she said.
In the almost five months since opening, Purvis is enjoying her position as a business owner.
“It’s not easy all the time, like any job, but you find the challenges, work through them and remember what you’re doing this for, which is the community,” she said. “I have a team already that I can trust just after three months,” Purvis continued. “I feel like I’ve already created a community and I love that feeling.”
