Spring cleaning isn’t just about doing your regular cleaning routine, it is a time to get rid of old items you no longer use and clean those spaces you often overlook with your day-to-day cleaning.

Here are a few ways to get your spring cleaning started to have your home ready for the rest of the year.

Decluttering

Before starting on your cleaning tasks, the first thing you want to do is go through your home and declutter. Go through your closet, dressers and cabinets. Sort out items that you want to keep and those you can donate or just need thrown away. If you aren’t using them then it is time to let go.

As you go through the decluttering process organize your items to maximize your space. Consider installing additional shelving or adding a closet organizer to help with your clothes. Not only will this maximize your space it will look tidier.

Create a schedule

Spring cleaning your home can seem like a daunting task. Dividing up your cleaning into sections will help you more easily go about the project. Start by creating a list of the areas in your home that need cleaning the most, from the kitchen to your attic.

Prioritize tasks based on areas of the home that are most in use. For example, clean the kitchen and bathroom first because these areas often need more extensive cleaning, but you also want to be able to use these rooms. Next, move onto easier spaces like the bedrooms or office. Once you have created your list add specific tasks for each room. For example, in the kitchen list countertops, under the refrigerator, the cabinets. Check off tasks as you go. This will help you stay on track and provide you with sense of accomplishment.

High traffic areas

When starting on the actual cleaning of your home, start with high traffic areas that will be in use the most. The kitchen, bathrooms and living room should be top priority. In the kitchen clean the countertops, stove, outside and inside of cabinets and don’t forget underneath your refrigerator. In the bathroom clean all surfaces and don’t forget to clean behind the toilet.

Overlooked areas

Spring cleaning is a time to clean areas you often don’t focus on. During your cleaning routine, be sure to clean your light fixtures, air vents, baseboards and ceiling fans. Cleaning these areas will make your home look cleaner and it will improve air quality in your home.

Clean your windows, inside and out. Vacuum rugs, curtains and your furniture to remove dirt and debris. Finally, don’t forget about your outdoor spaces. Take time to sweep and hose off your patios or porches. Clean all entryways by sweeping off dead leaves and other debris. The key is to make these areas feel fresh so put the chairs on your porch in their right spots and wipe down your outdoor furniture as well.

Keeping these tips in mind will help you tackle your spring cleaning with ease. Creating and sticking to a cleaning schedule, decluttering old items, and paying attention to overlooked areas will help you have a sparkling clean home for the months to come.
