Blue Watermelon winning meal served at Perry High; runner up from Queen Creek High

Blue Watermelon Project’s Feeding the Future event is a culinary contest that challenges students to create healthy, great-tasting meals to bring awareness to the school nutrition industry. Students work with local chefs and school mentors to craft a school lunch tray that meets the financial and nutritional standards of the National School Lunch Program.

Last week, hundreds of students, faculty and staff lined up in the Perry High School cafeteria to try junior Charlie Tugade's third-place winning meal from Blue Watermelon Project’s Feeding the Future contest.

Tugade's deconstructed lumpia bowl with broccoli salad was given the thumbs up. She also received a $2,000 scholarship from Dairy Council of Arizona after placing in the annual Feeding the Future event on Jan. 27. Queen Creek High School's Madison Newman placed second in the competition.
